For the most reliable installation, it’s recommended to use a wired connection where possible (i.e. using a Lightning-to-Ethernet Adaptor); however, if controlling the installation over a wireless network is preferred or required, our products are designed to allow this with the following steps.
All ENTTEC products that support eDMX protocols (Art-Net/sACN/KiNet/KlingNet) will work with a wireless router. In this example, we have used the Luminair app to control our ODE Mk2 with a non-specific wireless router (for assistance with the Luminair app with the Airport Express, please use their Guide).
For this, you will require:
- An ENTTEC eDMX to DMX node (For example, the ENTTEC ODE Mk3)
- An Art-Net/sACN source (For example, an Apple iPad running Luminair)
- Wireless Router
- Computer with LAN port
- CAT6 cable
There are two ways of connecting your ENTTEC device to the network, DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and Static IP. ENTTEC devices are configured for DHCP from the factory.
This will allow them to receive an automatic IP assignment from your router.
Alternatively, you may choose to configure the ENTTEC device with a static IP address. Both options will be covered in this guide.
Connecting to the ENTTEC device via DHCP
Using DHCP will allow your router to automatically assign IP addresses to the ENTTEC device and iPad so that they may communicate correctly. Some legacy ENTTEC devices do not support DHCP; please check the product specific user manual.
- Most routers come pre-configured with DHCP enabled. In this example, DHCP is enabled and configured to assign IP addresses from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149.
- In addition to enabling DHCP, you must create a wireless network for your iPad to connect to. In our example, we named that network “Luminair” and applied the necessary security settings.
Connecting to the ENTTEC device via static IP
- First, it’s necessary to configure the wireless network and verify the router’s DHCP settings. The wireless network may be named anything you like and configured with the necessary security settings. In our example, we are using the network “Luminair”. Before assigning a static IP to the ENTTEC device, we must confirm the IP settings of the router, as well as the range of addresses that it is assigning via DHCP.
- In our example, we see that the subnet is 192.168.1.x. The IP address range for DHCP is 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149. We want to assign our static IP outside of this range to avoid conflicts.
Connect iPad to network.
- With the router configured, it is now possible to connect the iPad to the wireless network. In our example, it is connected to the “Luminair” network and given an automatic IP of 192.168.1.102. This falls within the range of available IP addresses configured in the router.
Connect the ENTTEC device to the router.
- Plug the ENTTEC device into your router’s LAN ports, as shown in the image. Do not use the internet port. It is best to first power on the router, then once the ENTTEC device is connected, power it on.
Configuring the ENTTEC Device.
The configuration for each ENTTEC device varies between products. Therefore it is recommended to look at the product-specific user manual to configure your device.
If you cannot configure the ENTTEC devices settings or access the web interface, it is advised to first try this with a wired connection before moving it back to a wireless connection.
Configure the application
The configuration for each application will vary. Therefore it is recommended to look at the product-specific user manual to configure your device. Remember that the output settings of the application will need to match the location on the ENTTEC device.
Below is an example of how the Luminair app would be setup:
Open Luminair and select the status icon in the upper right corner. Within this menu, select Art-Net.
Within the Art-Net tab, you should see that output is enabled, and the universe and subnet are set to zero. These are the default settings on the ENTTEC device. These settings must always match on the ENTTEC device and Luminair. Node defaults to broadcast, but it is possible to change that setting by clicking on this.
Once in the node settings, Luminair will attempt to scan for nodes on the network. Here we see that Luminair has discovered the ODE Mk2 in this example with an IP of 192.168.1.103, within the range of addresses configured in the router earlier.
Clicking on the discovered node will configure Luminair to now Unicast to that device, as seen below. This means that data from Luminair will go directly to the ENTTEC device and nowhere else on the network. If Luminair does not discover the ENTTEC device, it may work to leave broadcast enabled. Otherwise, proceed to configure the ENTTEC device with a static IP.
At this point, Luminair should be communicating with the ENTTEC device correctly, and control over your fixtures should be working. If not, please review the troubleshooting tips at the end of this guide.
